Ronda Rousey, who lost her UFC women’s bantamweight title in a stunning loss to Holly Holm last month, has admitted she was embarrassed by her performance in Melbourne – and is desperate to return to the ring and win back her title.
Rousey, speaking for the first time since losing to Holm on November 15, told ESPN Magazine in an exclusive interview: “I just feel so embarrassed. How I fought after that is such an embarrassing representation of myself. I wasn’t even fucking there.”
“I’m just really fucking sad,” she said. “I need to come back. I need to beat this chick. Who knows if I’m going to pop my teeth out or break my jaw or rip my lip open again. I have to fucking do it. It doesn’t matter. I have to do it.”
The previously undefeated Rousey was the heavy favourite to beat Holm, having dispatched of her three prior opponents in 64 seconds combined. But Rousey was unable to get Holm on the ground and had no answer for Holm’s superior power and accuracy.
Early in the second round, Holm knocked Rousey out with a kick to the head, ending Rousey’s three-year reign as champion. It was the first loss of Rousey’s career, and she acknowledged it didn’t go well from the start.
“I got hit in that first round I cut my lip open and knocked a couple of my teeth loose,” Rousey said. “I was out on my feet from the very beginning.”
Rousey suffered a badly split lip in the knockout loss and has undergone cosmetic surgery to repair it. She said she might not even be able to eat properly for some time. “It might be three to six months before I can eat an apple, let alone take an impact.
“I wasn’t thinking clearly. I had that huge cut in my mouth and I just spit [the blood] out at my feet. Then they brought the bucket over and I’m like, ‘Why didn’t I spit it in the bucket?’ I never spit on the ground.”
Rousey insisted she didn’t take Holm for granted. “I always think I can lose all of them. I’m the only one that’s scared when I walk in there. I’m always fucking scared.”
So will she fight again? “Of course. What else am I going to fucking do?”
Rousey did, however, acknowledge what is at stake against Holm. “Everything is going to be determined by that. Either I’ll win and keep going or I won’t and I’ll be done with everything.”
